There are weddings that feel like a celebration—and then there are Orthodox Church weddings that feel sacred.

Juan and Molly’s Orthodox wedding at St. Anthony Orthodox Church in Tulsa was the latter, steeped in ancient tradition, reverence, and color. As a Tulsa wedding photographer, I was deeply moved by the parallels and beauty within the Orthodox Christian rite of marriage. And when a celebration this timeless ends with a modern reception at one of Tulsa’s most iconic mid-century venues? It’s unforgettable.

The Wedding Ceremony | St. Anthony Orthodox Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Located in Downtown Tulsa, St. Anthony Orthodox Church offers a breathtaking setting for Orthodox weddings that honors the sacrament’s solemnity while surrounding couples with incredible beauty. The vibrant iconography, warm wood interiors, glowing candlelight, and stained-glass windows created an atmosphere of reverence and awe.

Father Jason Blais led the ceremony for Molly and Juan- he also took the time to explain the key elements of the Orthodox rite to me in advance. Kindly providing me with a photography guide that was both insightful and incredibly helpful. Here’s a quote I found especially moving:

“Our hope is that the images you capture reflect not only the joy of the couple but also the sacred beauty of the Orthodox Christian wedding ceremony.”

As a photographer, having these expectations clearly laid out allowed me to fully respect the space while still documenting every meaningful moment—from the crowning to the reading of the Gospel, the Dance of Isaiah, and the Common Cup.

Unlike Catholic weddings, where guests and the couple alternate between sitting and standing, the Orthodox tradition calls for everyone to remain standing during the entire ceremony—a detail that adds a layer of intention and presence. The crowning ceremony was one of my favorite parts: watching the priest place ornate crowns on Juan and Molly’s heads as a symbol of unity and divine blessing was powerful and humbling.

The Modern Reception Venue | The Vault, Tulsa, OK

After the ceremony, Juan and Molly transitioned from historic tradition to timeless design. Their reception at The Vault in downtown Tulsa was equal parts architectural statement and joyful celebration.

As an architect herself, it’s no surprise Molly chose this venue. Formerly the First National Auto Bank, this mid-century modern gem was built between 1958 and 1960, boasting zig-zag rooflines, massive panes of glass, and industrial elegance with retro charm. Today, it’s one of Tulsa’s most sought-after spots for events, known for its craft cocktails, modern American fare, and commitment to sustainability.

The couple’s vision came to life with sleek florals from Poppy Flowers, a fresh, vibrant palette, and joyful energy that filled the room from toasts to the final dance. The balance of sacred ceremony and modern celebration was seamless—reflecting the thoughtfulness and joy that Juan and Molly brought to every detail of their day.

Favorite Wedding Day Moments

  • The Crowning: An ancient Orthodox tradition symbolizing unity and shared life.
  • Dance of Isaiah: A joyful, symbolic walk around the altar representing the couple’s first steps together in faith.
  • Candles & Icons: The spiritual ambiance created by candlelight and vibrant iconography was a dream to photograph.
  • Mid-century reception design: Every angle at The Vault felt intentional and editorial—perfect for a design-loving couple.
